    Tries to be a meta-commentary on its prequel without really understanding the actual impression it left on audiences and the People at large. This movie it's so enamored with its perceived shadow that it forgets what it itself is even doing.     Taipei at its smallest and most "claustrophobic", I'd say.
    The dynamism that one most commonly associates with the idea of a city is gone in Yang's vision: Taipei is a cage, a suffocating nightmare that has no escape.

    Many close-up shots and methodical framing emphasize the entrapped feel of the protagonists, with few (justified) exceptions.

    A very satisfying narrative that will definitely get more enjoyable with subsequent rewatches.

    As of writing this, definitely my favourite "Taipei Movie" so far.

    "Pretentiousness" is a word that gets thrown around a lot, especially by detractors of this film, and while it is very tempting to call this a pretentious endeavour, i don't think that really fits.
    Pretentiousness signals a lack of depth and meaning, covered up by the illusion that there actually is; but *The Tree of Life* definitely does have a lot of meaning. The problem for me is what that meaning is and how it is presented.
