  As a Tibetan, its rare for me to see nuanced approaches to Tibetan culture in film and animation from outsiders. I knew what was coming, but I was morbidly curious enough to give the Chinese/Japanese 2011 film "Tibetan Dog" a shot. I got exactly what I expected: textbook orientalism in the invention of a Tibet for the Chinese and/or Japanese viewer to project their fantasies and desires, indicative of the timeless hegemonic power dynamics between the colonizer and the colonized.…

  Family dynamics and the characteristics of India's postcolonial middle class are explored through a series of walks around Darjeeling.

  There's something breath-taking about how Satyajit Ray depicts his characters and the human condition. The family-drama premise of this film is so simple, yet it also serves as a deeply nuanced and sensitive reflection on India's westernization after independence and how it continues to shape the Indian consciousness. I don't know how he does it, but its amazing to see. Skip Darjeeling Limited, watch this instead!
