I came here for James Mason so I'm partial to the second half of this movie. Surprisingly, the only thing more smooth than Mason's velvety voice is Rudolf who's asked to, and easily goes, full fucking James Bond on his adversaries. And here we thought he was just some Englishman on a fishing vacation, not some paladin who went to the Eton prep school of supersoldiers.

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion

    Neon Genesis Evangelion

    ★★★★

Endlessly cool and endlessly frustrating, Evangelion is split into 2 parts: the action-packed side that doesn't mind mind having fun, and the intellectual side that's way too serious. On my third watch, it became obvious that Anno has no desire to explain things to his audience and is just using Judeo-Christian references to seem exotic to a Japanese audience. Anyone can tell you he's just using them incorrectly or out of context so don't bother calling him a genius. What Evangelion HAS created is an interesting world with complex characters (sometimes TOO complex) that is riveting when it doesn't get cocky or intellectual.

    Le Bonheur

    ★★

The only thing shocking about this movie is that I can't find any reviews below 3 stars. Well, allow me...

French Bill Hader's life is portrayed as idyllic yet he still manages to fuck things up by bringing another woman into the mix. That's what would have happened in the real world. Except he doesn't fuck things up, he gets his cake and eats it too. I get it. It's satire. But everything about Le Bonheur is so simplistic and inhuman that it might as well be robots going in for their routine software updates.

Also, the editing isn't genius. It's weird.

Is Cop Land one of the legal corruption greats of all time? Possibly. The plot is certainly original, the world we see is rich and complex, and Stallone's portrayal of the sad sap/hero is compelling and inspiring. Do I wish we saw more of the supporting cast like Jeanine Garofalo and Edie Falco? Yes. Why all the Stallone hate? I don't get it.
