  The story is remarkable and had me crying and wanting to whoop with joy in the cinema. But as a film it struggles hold its own as a feature. The characters are loosely drawn. The protagonist is devoid of charisma or interest barring the fact that he has a fiancée at home he wants to get back to. The 45 mins or so in the middle is thrilling and it shouldn’t have been any longer than that. Always a treat…

  I was expecting Bond but I got Le Carre and I’m not complaining. Good script. Not too flashy. Fassbender very much a modern day George smiley.

  Interminable follow up to a pretty stretched idea in the first one. This film is a succession of shots of Phoenix walking slowly down prison corridors for over 2 hours. What’s it for? Who’s it for? What does any of it mean? 

  I was yearning yearning for Batman to turn up. This film needed Batman or it needed to not be a film.
