The whimsy of this film is at such a level that if it were revealed that the screenplay was actually written by a seventh-grade creative writing class experimenting with the exquisite corpse, I wouldn't be too surprised. So much of it is absurd, but you can't be mad about it because everyone, including the production designer and art director, is so disarmingly charming that you just must succumb to it. Bowie of course is the most alluring of all ingredients and makes the movie, but Roseanna Arquette and the mise-en-scene are worth saviouring, too. For a "bad movie," it's pretty tasty.
