L’Atalante is deeply rooted in its character’s youth, and how that that inexperience mixes with love and forgiveness. It feels like something that’s missing in today’s independence-minded society, but maybe a good lesson to hold on to in the coming years (albeit minus the physical abuse and abandonment).

Port of Shadows 1938
A dark, brooding story about love, masculinity, and fate in France during the inter-war years. Jean Gabin is a smoldering, loveable brute trying to make a new life for himself with or without the woman he loves. He’s foiled at every step by the local criminal element, and only tragedy can ensue.
Carné has a sharp eye for atmosphere and Jacques Prévert’s dialogue adds a philosophical depth to otherwise stereotypical character types.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2023
I was a terrible DM when I played D&D, and this made me want to go back in the mid-90s and tell myself to just loosen up and let the PCs have fun.
