Tsui Hark's historical romance and comedy is solid crowd pleasing fun, and only exceptionally broad if you haven't seen any Hong Kong comedies of the age. It particularly relies on the charm of its female leads and hokey plot, though it always looks lovely

I hadn't picked up in advance that this was based on a memoir, so was intrigued by the amount of extraneous detail fleshing the film out. It also made the title seem odd - particularly when we discover about halfway through that the person who has disappeared is dead (metaphorically they linger throughout the film of course). Sheer cinematic perfection, I am not sure I have seen the full flush of romance depicted quite this well: the nervousness of entry, that joy and edge of being in the partnership, and the stomach-churning horror of a break-up. Its all here and its all shot and dressed up it a swoonsome package. And the ending surprised me (and was well earned and made me cry).
