Lighthouse Island 1989
Every moment of this 25-minute fairytale is strange and unexpected, but the final twist is especially fun. The subtle way it subverts expectations regarding gender roles - and even challenges the way humans are centered in the story - was a pleasant surprise. Also, there's a few Jim Henson's Creature Shop creations wandering through many scenes, which is always nice.

What if they built the whole movie out of the action set piece? What if the 3 acts of a script were "runaway elevator", "runaway bus", and "runaway train"?
A nail-biting thrill ride from start to finish, packed with constant reminders of America's crumbling infrastructure, and the eternal process of our expanding concrete and steel footprint. Pretty cool that the filmmakers apparently tossed out the idea of covering the history of their subject accurately, and instead made a movie about how all women in the 1700's wanted to fuck a castrato (and his brother), and how Farinelli's voice was so good, it gave Handel an orgasm and/or a heart attack when he heard him sing to his music.
