Flimsy premise but I don't watch Jason Statham movies for the world-building.

A brooding take on the "guy with a violent past" movie, maybe too much so. The seriousness with which it approaches the main character's past felt a bit incongruous with the exaggerated violence (hammer and axe murders in public). Some of the blood splatter effects looked a little off. I wonder if Adrien Brody's forehead wrinkles actually form a well-defined heart as shown on the poster or if someone edited it to look like that, and if so, to what end.

I deeply hated this film. The nonstop jabbering of main characters Everett and Fay - with each other, over each other, over other people - was insufferable. It's almost unfair of me to rate the film because my gut reaction to the first 20 minutes was so viscerally negative that it undoubtedly tainted whatever positive aspects (if any) that came afterwards. I just didn't feel any tension and found the scenes of hectic prattling incredibly irritating. I'm almost certainly in the minority with this opinion, but I found The Vast of Night vastly boring.

For a 2-hour-long action thriller, there was not enough action nor enough thrills. The de-aging was an interesting technical achievement, but still slid into that uncanny valley territory for me. Some of the fight scenes looked odd; since I watched this at home, I didn't have the benefit of the intended 120 fps so I wonder how much of a difference that would have made.
