In my opinion, Miyazaki’s most stunning work visually. The opening scene of the fire and the scene of the arrow shooting itself come to mind, to just name a few. amazing use of score and sound, great worldbuilding.
robert pattinson had so much fun voice acting this role and has so much range too, it’s so fun. christian bale also nailed his role.
overall, one of my favorite miyazaki movies, if not my favorite—between the storytelling, the visuals, the psychedelic…
the movie expresses the emotions the characters are feeling so well. the dual horror of feeling out-of-place in one’s body but also of not knowing what’s next—of being afraid to live that different life because you don’t know what is to come, and the absolute despair that arrives when you can’t actually run from it.
Acting and the use of the camera are amazing, but somewhat let down by the characterization of its characters. Felt weird that the asian woman is explicitly used as a learning experience for the main character because she “reminds him of his birth mom”, as well as the abusive cop dad getting a redemption arc.
Maybe a wee bit too much going on but def lives up to the first movie. Ending felt rushed, like it def could’ve used another 30 minutes. overall really fun and i do think this movie uses the returning cast a lot better (especially Delia is a much more interesting character here). I love Winona Ryder’s constant look of shocked horror.
