In hindsight Soderbergh’s anti-Ocean’s heist comedy is also his Hillbilly Elegy/Demon Copperhead. Really feels like his attempt at explaining the economic anxieties we were all told led to all kinds of stuff in 2016. A film whose beauty is only rivaled by its shallowness. Sort of a cousin to The Northman in how Eggers takes a famously well-established story, drops any attempt at making it “about something” and instead delivers one of the most gorgeously mounted versions of said story anyone has ever seen. I greatly enjoy watching his movies. I also think he should read something that makes him weep and then make that movie.

The decision to conceal the shark is famously what keeps it suspenseful nearly 50 years removed from its release, but even though that and the jump scares still very much register, every time I return to this what really resonates is Spielberg’s command of the form.

There’s the mind blowing oner on the boat where the politicians get out of the car and threateningly surround Brody as they pressure him to keep the beaches open, where Brody and the mayor…
