It’s a very different feeling to watch a movie about gambling and corruption destroying people’s faith in a cultural institution in 2025 compared to the last time I saw it, in 2008 or 2009. It’s not that sports were exactly a shining example of morality 17 years ago but the inescapable number of ads for gambling apps and other ways to profit off the game make this feel especially relevant to a fan that’s seeing something they love be torn apart while they can’t do anything about it. And of course, that’s not just a statement about sports.
