there are a lot of intelligent things to say about why and how this is good, however it would take significantly more words than i’m willing to type in a letterboxd review. my main takeaway… no one will ever again reach the levels of “match my freak” that are on display in this film

still dope. love the camera work, visual effects, and color grading in this. very fun, very depressing

props for keeping up the depressingly somber tone throughout the entire runtime i guess. i enjoy what this has to say about masculinity but while i appreciate the tone, violence, and pace of the film that create the subtext of the underlying critique of patriarchy, i did find it a bit tedious and repetitive. the countless shots of ryan gosling just looking sad and contemplative, the excessive (maybe unnecessary) gore, the boring soundtrack, and the sloth pace, all made it just not as enjoyable to watch as it is to think about after the fact
