What a film! It stars Dolly Parton and Bert Reynolds, but somehow Charles Durning managed to snag the best number and dance routine. Fabulous.

The promo copy suggests that Jackie Shane came into her own in Toronto, but the doc shows that it was in LA that she became who she wanted to be, at least in part, with its bittersweet ending.

Though what makes this documentary especially worth seeing is the that you get to hear Jackie Shane reflect on her career and her life in her own words, through her own recorded voice, and through her autobiography, which is read by other Black trans women.

    It's a powerful testimony.

Without a doubt the smartest film I have seen all year, and it's not even close.

Gloria Swanson is stunning as Norma Desmond, the aging silent-screen star who lures struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) into her fantasy world where she remains relevant. I can't say too much more without spoiling it, but it's a dark and gorgeous, and I highly recommend it.
