A great story with some truly wonderful acting, but I think Spielberg and Quincy Jones were the wrong people to adapt this novel. It was a smart idea to soften the narrative a little bit so it's not just wallowing in misery, but Spielberg takes it too far and turns this thing into a tonal mess, thanks in part to Quincy Jones's unusually awful score. I also don't like how much of the queer content from the novel is cut out.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984
The first 15 minutes with the Busby Berkeley musical number that transitions into sort of an American James Bond riff is insane and fun. There's some very cool stuff in the last 30 minutes or so too, even if it looks more like a Disney imagineer showcase than a real movie sometimes. The middle is unfortunately a bit boring and, yes, pretty racist. I enjoyed Ke Huy Quan on this rewatch, but Kate Capshaw's character is terrible (though she looks amazing).
In conclusion, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a land of contrasts.

The Decline of Western Civilization 1981
X is not my favorite band in this movie, but they are the only people I would be able to tolerate hanging out with for more than 10 minutes.
