Wicked, the 2024 film, is both a highly polished piece of contemporary studio filmmaking, and an adaptation of a piece of genuine (and genuinely odd) American folklore. L. Frank Baum started his “Oz” book series after trying (and mostly failing) a bizarre array of business ventures, including: starting magazines, newspapers, writing plays and musicals(!), even poultry farming, which was apparently a fad in late 19th century America.

In a Lonely Place 1950
Seeing this a second time, I was impressed by how well Bogart skates the edge of likable. He is charming and a little bit menacing, but the real depths of his violence don’t show until the final act. It’s an impressive trick, we ultimately see the film from the perspective of the woman who is usually given the role of femme fatale, and we feel what she feels as his character descends.
