Megalopolis manages to be patronising and pathetic at once. What makes it worse is its total lack of originality or imagination. The movie labours over coddling its audience and telling us that everything is going to be alright, without having any sense of what is really wrong. Napoleon 2023
Film is about myth-making and this movie understands that, although it struggles to communicate this idea succintly. There are 1000s of books about Napoleon if you want to figure out an accurate account. That would be an impossible and dreary task for a blockbuster to undertake. Instead, we have a character study that takes on all aspects of the man. The mockery of the man (stature/crassness/being french) and the clownish stereotype feature as much as the military prowess and the focused ambition. Like all men, and especially those of the 19th Century, he can be both legend and imbecile all at once.
