Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation 2015
no matter how crisp, thought-out, and well-executed the action sequences get these movies will never be truly good because there's not a single interesting character. phillip seymour hoffman was able to make something decent a few movies ago but it's shocking they can't even come up with a compelling villain. especially when they basically have liscense to get as hammy and over the top with it as they want.

they nearly perfected the formula in this one. the main plot doesn't matter all that counts is clearly explaining each action set piece a few times so we know exactly what's about to happen and then we can watch them struggle through it. it might as well be a series of short films but as a movie it works fine

For the record I went into this with zero expectations. I hadn't seen the trailer so I wasn't primed for a John Wick style revenge thriller or anything. All I knew was Nicolas Cage is looking for a pig and it was gonna be a kind of slow burn.
I liked the idea of subverting the revenge thriller where instead of burning down the dad's house or something he wins over his heart. But man, that cooking montage was corny…
