American Beauty 1999
Overt symbolism and soapy tragedies aside, there’s something starkly disturbing and revelatory about the self-incurred suffocation these characters inflict on themselves. It’s sympathetic as much as a personal and societal criticism, capturing the depressive state of detachment either rigor or suburbia has worked into otherwise promising human life. Framing the entire melodrama in the visual atmosphere of a twisted doll house is apt for this wasteful charade of misperception and dishonest living, the painful tremors of the ultimate conclusion bearing an authenticity so scarce it becomes almost satisfying.
