Is it possible to love a movie with an insufferable main character? Are movies with unlikable protagonists like the Death Grips of movies?
Like we're all so media literate now that a likable movie with a well paced plot is kind of boring?
P.S. I kind of like Death Grips but perhaps I'm not there at the upper level of consumption for movies.
I will say I was thoroughly intrigued at their parody of Crazy Rich Asians and their parody…
Kiki's Delivery Service but it's sex instead of bread.
This movie amuses me the way Wes Anderson films do and re-invigorates a desire to live by ideals like the way Ghibli films do. The soundtrack made me smile from cheek to cheek and the set design / art direction made my eyes happy.
The chapter marks featuring renaissance / victorian style art made me think of Beef on Netflix.
I also loved how Duncan Wedderburn was like the Victorian equivalent of a fuck boy who brags about how great he is in bed only to become the ultimate simp.
SCORE: A-
Being a Chinese-American filmmaker, I feel especially biased here. Give me a distant family with complex intergenerational trauma and I'm automatically sobbing on my couch thinking of my grandma.
As a result, I find Yang's honest exploration of his father's history and his dedication to the specific time periods the story was set in - very compelling. The flashbacks especially so with it's filmic texture and it's warm nostalgic tones.
Speaking of the flashbacks, the Taiwanese cast absolutely…
A grumpy old man, who very much reminds me of my own grandpa, is brought out of his darkness with love, good food, and realizes he still has things he want to accomplish in life.
Straight forward almost classic storytelling. Solid movie. Enjoyable watch.
