Another solid crime drama from Soderbergh. Blanchett and Fassbender are predictably great, but the standout for me was Marisa Abela, who masterfully navigates a tricky emotional role, even if her name is really annoying to try and say out loud.

Absolutely brilliant satire. A clever and merciless evisceration of Hollywood vacuity, excess and amorality.

The Holdovers 2023
On paper, this is a pretty conventional coming of age story: abrasive young lad loosens up old curmudgeon, and in turn learns what real integrity looks like. But Alexander Payne has long excelled at teasing out unexpected nuance in non-traditional relationships. He refuses to go too maudlin or sand down his characters' rough edges, and so we get this beautifully layered sub-theme about accepting our role in the suffering of others. At the end, our hero has learned forgiveness. The hope is that he'll someday learn to forgive himself.
