The monsters, supermarket pandemonium, and that absolute gut-punch of an ending all build enough suspense and thrill to make the sometimes corny script forgivable. It’s a good slice of cosmic horror making bold moves for a genuinely compelling watch. That part with the rope? Genius. I’d like to watch the b&w version of the film. I can imagine it gives everything more of a classic monster flick effect which would help the dialogue pop into place. Marcia Gay Harden is truly the best part of this movie though. The monsters eat a few people; she doesn’t leave a crumb.

Though understated in style to start, this film crescendos into a beautiful storm. We’re taken on a complex journey of reflection, grief and reconciliation through Adam’s relationship with Harry and his late parents, simultaneously navigating themes of queer identity and loss. The genius of Haigh and his cast is that by the end of the film, we feel that knot of horror, despair, loneliness within ourselves, just like Adam - but by following him on that journey we’re given the wisdom to know that we’re not alone in how we feel. The storyline will wreck you, but the process is beautiful.

Slick, subtle and does exactly what it says on the tin - the scrutiny of a single tragic event unfurls a complex set of circumstances around an even more complex family dynamic. The matter-of-fact courtroom setting heightens the impact of each revelation. Incredible performances from Sandra Hüller, Milo Machado-Graner and the dog.
