  Body Double 1984

  Melanie griffith’s insane eighties hot streak of Body Double, Something Wild, Working Girl and yes Cherry 2000 and Fear City was so powerful that it reverberated through time and shaped my mind despite never having seen any of these movies until I was like 33. A friend recently said that as he gets older all that matters to him is how much of a movie is cool shit to look at… on that rubric, Body Double should have won an Oscar. Weight this review with the fact that I dress almost exactly like when Jake Scully wears a porno guy disguise

  Chinatown 1974

  ★★★★★ Rewatched 20 Mar 2025

  A rewatch on vhs, with a hilarious promo for all the other “romantic” titles on offer from paramount like Saturday Night Fever and Sunset Boulevard. Anybody in charge watch those movies, or..?

  Polanski plays an encore of the famous around-the-door bit from rosemary’s baby, except instead of the antichrist it’s Faye Dunaway. I gasped differently. 

  I like my nose. I like breathing through it.

  What an incredibly sweet and earnest movie. Maybe a little clumsy, but good-hearted and smart enough to make an absolute MEAL out of great fashion and late 80’s Tokyo to help when the script and story sag a little. Carrie Hamilton forever

  Drive My Car 2021

  I’m a stupid guy and once in a while I go and see an actual Good Movie and this one tore me up. Beautiful unfolding of the conflicting truths that can exist inside a person and the way that your reading of art can change based on the context of your life— something of which I’m painfully aware and belatedly weeping to recognize spelled out in a film.
