The Blackcoat's Daughter 2015
Patient, atmospheric horror executed this perfectly doesn't come along often.
This film stirs something in the stomach, so slowly and steadily that you don't even notice it until it drops. I'd been wanting to see a movie that made me need to turn the lights on after and this was the one. The magic here hangs by what it nails: the sounds you hear when you stop and listen.

Hard to Be a God 2013
This movie took me multiple attempts and multiple sittings to finish. As much a wonder to behold as it is a gauntlet to persevere, this wandering tour through the filthiest world on film is brilliantly conceived. One of the most uniquely textured and disgusting movies ever made in both visual and sound design, meticulously constructed for your viewing pleasure/displeasure.
