This was so much than I’d imagined. I’ve been looking forward to watching it for ages, and they absolutely knocked it out of the park. I love the premise, but the execution is even better. The film has so many great moments. Between Ash’s battle with all of his tiny clones, his fight with the three Necronomicons and him teaching knights how to fight, I’m not sure I could pick a favourite.
Was incredibly cool to see Kurosawa’s style for the first time. I was a little disappointed he went with black and white for this one, because I’ve heard he does really interesting stuff with color, but it fit very well, and the cinematography was stunning for it. I love the portrayal of the Witch and Lady Asaji, they're fantastically unsettling. While it was certainly a different experience to watch a film drawing from the style of Noh, it was really cool to see and to hear. I will definitely be looking into more of Kurosawa’s work in the future.

This is quite easily the best realization of a fairy story on screen I’ve ever seen. It’s a perfect balance of children’s vibrantly coloured daydreams and period-accurate realism that invokes wonder while being believable within its world and remains light throughout. It feels like children’s story which makes it much easier to suspend disbelief, and it presents an interesting take on the coming of age story.
