Possibly the most 3½ star movie of all time

Kind of fascinating in how off-kilter and oddly-paced it is, continually refusing to take the paths you expect it to. Really homes in on the grubbiness and grime of that period, with hints of the new age to come: a flushing toilet! toothpaste!

Ultimately it never really came together for me, and I found myself far more invested in Riz Ahmed and Jake Gyllenhaal's relationship than John C Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix's, but there's undoubtedly something captivating about its unabashed weirdness.

Fun! Second half was better than the first, although it did feel a bit like they weren't sure how to end it.

Nothing revolutionary politically but I'll always have time for a film which excoriates Nice Guys.

Just a shame that the whole thing looks so staid. The titles and hair/costume design of the main character suggest a much more visually interesting film, but it's shot in a really dull way, neither gritty nor stylised enough to be interesting.

Wish I hadn't known the first big reveal before seeing it!

A worthy addition to the Karren Karagulian Cleaning Sick Out Of His Car Cinematic Universe.

Between that and the protagonist being a sex work and the dream of going to Disneyland (maybe also a reference to the original planned ending to Pretty Woman?) it feels like a blend of Sean Baker's precious works, only more overtly scathing of power hierarchies. (Haven't seen Red Rocket yet.)

Definitely some Safdies influence too, the whole time they're searching for Ivan in the car…
