    The Seventh Victim

    ★★★½

The Seventh Victim is a well-paced mystery/horror that leans more into the mystery piece than the horror. Featuring the debut of Kim Hunter as the leading role of Mary Gibson, a young woman coming home to NYC from school to search for her older sister, and Jean Brooks in a striking supporting role of the sister Jacqueline who is mentally ill and falls into the ranks of a satanic cult. In many ways, this film lays out a roadmap for…

I felt an immense sense of deja vu from the opening scene of Detour. This quintessential piece of 1940s noir opens with a scene I truly thought I'd seen before. It echoes the eventual film 'The Blue Dahlia', with a man mentally unwell as a response to the jukebox playing a song he has trauma attached to. I can definitely see the appeal, and I will likely watch this again, but this first viewing was a bit of a dud for me. Most of it came from personal taste I think -- the story itself just felt too melodramatic for me. The character of Claudia (Monica Vitti) was extremely underdeveloped, she fluctuated so often with her emotions it felt like a roller coaster watching her. I may have missed something but most, if not all, her mood…

    Hurrah! For Freedom

Watched this for a Korean Film Culture class. This is impossible to properly give a full review of considering only 53 minutes of it exist. Because of that, the narrative is incredibly difficult to follow and characters fade in and out of importance in the plot itself. I actually think the abrupt ending is the least jarring part of the unfinished film. All the performances are good, though, and if it were complete I imagine I might have liked this a decent bit. As is, though, it's a bit difficult to watch because of how incomplete it is.
