  All the nihilism we've come to expect from a 70s cop movie, packaged with some dynamic action sequences and perfectly-pitched Why Fucking Bother performances from Gould and Blake.

  I revisited Solaris for the first time after a good 20 years (I last saw it on television, undoubtedly pan-and-scanned, and probably riddled with adverts). The only effect it had on me back then was the feeling that it was too long, and wasn't quite as good as 2001 - the obvious, lazy comparison - but that it was obviously good, and important. It's a long, philosophical sci-fi film! Of course, in my bloody-minded book everything compares unfavourably to 2001,…
