Finally getting around to this review…
The Substance is clearly trying to tackle society’s obsession with youth and beauty, but it feels more surface-level than thought-provoking. The body horror elements are seriously impressive, but they overshadow any real depth, and end up making the film more about shock value than anything meaningful.
Although directed by a woman, the movie still manages to objectify its female protagonist, reducing her to a tragic, pitiful figure rather than giving her real agency. If…

It’s frustrating how much this movie leans on tired gendered tropes. Women are either victims, villains, or fantasies, while the men get all the complexity. For a film trying so hard to be deep and meaningful, it missed the mark for me.

This movie was better than expected. It sends you back in time and makes you feel like you like folk music more than you actually do. The actors are fantastic, but in all honesty, I just don’t think Bob Dylan is that interesting, so the WOW factor wasn’t there for me.
