    Not as satirical or edgy as I expected. Really just a teen comedy set in a super christian school/community. Probably a bit better than the average teen comedy but nothing really special. A few dated aspects but no worse than any other comedy of the era.

    I had never seen this before but it sure looked great restored and on the big screen at TIFF. I was particularly impressed with the scenes in the oil. Anyway, great epic film with a very un Hollywood ending. Some of the motivations regarding nationalism, brotherhood, etc. are a bit hard to relate to today though.

    The greatest strength of this film is that it delivers a constant stream of well composed unique images. The use of light is especially nice. And it's not all static shots with great framing, there's some nice moving shots throughout, similar to the use of music, reinforcing the playfulness of the film.     I've been wanting to see this since I first saw Boy Meets Girl (an all time favourite). Now that a subbed copy has finally come my way I can say it's a rough, minor work that certainly points towards Carax' future obsessions. His self aware relationship with film already showing his position in the lineage of stylists. I was missing Denis Levant though.
