    Mickey 17

Mickey 17 is nothing like Parasite, and that's what makes it special.

After the brilliance of Parasite and its subsequent multiple Oscar wins, the question quickly became, "What will Bong do next?" Many expected something in a similar vein, but after 6 long years of waiting, Mickey 17 arrives as a total departure from Parasite...in the best way possible.

Mickey 17 falls much more in line with Okja (my second favorite Bong film), tackling a far more comedic and, more…

    Eggers gives Nosferatu his words.

No amount of anticipation could have prepared me for this film. For the rest of my life I will proudly be able to say I saw Robert Eggers' Nosferatu at a nearly packed-out 10 pm IMAX showing on Christmas Day.

This film is incredibly commanding. Every aspect is so heavy and powerful you can't help but become entranced. The cinematography takes a slow, meticulous approach, with huge, methodical pans and a balance between intimate, tight…

I've always appreciated Bong, but Mother helped me place why—he plays by the same rules David Fincher does: crafting whatever he wants and the occasional generational thriller.

This film has inklings and ideas that so clearly paint Bong as the excellent director he is and laid the groundwork for what would become Parasite. I'd go as far to say that this is Bong's closest work to Parasite (barring Memories of Murder, which I have not seen yet). However, there are…

    Hancock

    ★★½

    American One Punch Man.

This film exists as a total enigma—releasing before the superhero wave really took off, yet during Will Smith's unstoppable prime—unable to capitalize on it's genre and therefore banking on the "timelessness" of it's lead (leading to the film being largely forgotten). However, it certainly is not horrible and actually presents an extremely compelling idea for a superhero story...in the first half. Having Hancock flip the script on superhero stories in a pre-MCU landscape is extremely fresh…

It’s a banger. Not quite to the level of the first one to me, but yeah, this is still peak sci-fi. Even for someone like me who doesn’t like sci-fi, Villeneuve just gets it. The design, effects, and language all create such a complete and competent world that feels so fully developed. He just gets it, man.

As for the actual movie, I loved a solid 95%, but as an annoying fuck who read the book, a few things just…

The best animated film since 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Beautiful filmmaking—visually and narratively. The visuals are awe inspiring. Taking what worked with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’s look and amplifying it to create a visual style I’ve never seen before. I’d even go as far as to say that the environments here rival those of Makoto Shinkai's.

However, while the animation is brilliant and could easily carry the film—the narrative is truly what separates this one from the pack.

    One of…
