I have serious issues with the story but thought the atmosphere, casting, acting were all very good.

Bold to make such drastic changes in a sequel to a big blockbuster movie honestly but didn't go anywhere interesting. I think the first movie is overrated on here (and by me) but I'll have to watch it again some time.

Imagine a beautifully made movie with a great score about a Nazi engineer building the weaponry the Nazis will use to launch war and kill millions. Now imagine the movie pretty much ignores how bad the Nazis are domestically and in other countries and the crimes they are commiting. This is basically the Japanese equivalent of exactly that.
Western people ignore or overlook the war crimes of the Japanese government in World War II because it didn't happen to them…
