Another solid film from Michel Franco. I went into this blind and was fully prepared for a downer, but what I got instead was a heartfelt film about complicated people in a complicated world, who through mutual trauma, find serenity in each other's pain. Memory presents a premise that could easily veer off the rails, but Chastain and Sarsgaard deliver two tender performances that manage to keep everything grounded. I will watch this again for the performances alone. No one seems to be talking about this, but it’s well worth checking out. You can do a hell of a lot worse, that's for sure.

"Sometimes a couple is kind of a chaos and everybody is lost."

Even better upon rewatch. Not only does this satiate the hunger for courtroom drama, but it's also a very honest and nuanced exploration of relationships, perception, and mental illness. I can't think of a more deserving…

Milos Forman: "No. I don't want to stop it. I just wanted to talk to Jim."

Me: "You are both fucking insane and this is what art is all about!"

It's really surprising that Summer of Sam isn't one of Spike Lee's more popular joints. It echoes the tensions that are present in Do the Right Thing and inserts them into the excess of the 70s during the Son of Sam murders. The cast is great, the characters are hilarious, the soundtrack is incredible, and The Who-obsessed Adrien Brody is punk as fuck. While it's really tough to see John Leguizamo as a ladies man and Lee's attempt at capturing…
