Simple little exercise in tension, and grossing the audience out. So reference heavy it's almost meta, but fun. Even though it is a period piece, Ti West's hipster aesthetic still surfaces, namely in the ageism displayed in the film, with it's paranoia of anything with a wrinkle.
Ann obvious parable to the Trump presidency, and not the film I was expecting to see.
Do not go in looking for a humans vs. alien invaders shoot 'em up. CAPTIVE STATE is a political thriller meets the underrated tv show FALLEN SKIES, and likely "deeper" than a lot of people who are going to flock to it it's first week in theaters.
This one has legs. I'm giving it a higher rating than my initial enjoyment level warrants, because I'm pretty sure it's a grower, not a shower.
Devastating. UNCUT GEMS recalls the the darker works of Altman and Lumet, embraces the unflinching brutality of Ferrara, echoes Friedkin, and gives a sometimes laughably bad comedy star, and a woman who has never made a film before, the two primary roles.
The Safdie Bros take a gamble as big as their lead character Howie, here. After the word of mouth wildfire that was GOOD TIME, they had/have a lot riding on this.
