The Substance 2024

Once it tipped over and committed to being a comedy was fun but can't help feeling there was a better movie within reach, was just missing a bit of substance (too easy, I know). I love body horror and there were some great moments here and some set pieces of empty, meaningless spectacle there. The shrivelled finger was more effective than the shower of blood.
I also love the idea that dystopian sci-fi has moved away from huge multi-national shadowy companies and more to shitty SaaS startups with terrible customer service.

I admire Marty for being so brazen and unflinching so late in his career.
The second act was frustrating from a storytelling point of view because the conceit of such a self-possessed woman being tortured by a dolt wasn't convincing. The audience was forced to be tethered to Leo to a point of being complicit in the evil, as opposed to jumping to the POV of the victims (he had plenty of time to do so). The…
