Safe starts as a film about burnout and the self destruction caused by believing that nobody puts you first or values you. We see the nuances of social ineptness when really the environment is the problem. This becomes what the rest of the film builds off of: a sudden and unexplainable sickness to chemicals, contaminants and the "20th century". The viewer is left to watch as Julianne Moore's character falls into a group, firm in their ideas about the sickness…

It's kind of sad that I agree with the idea (from the wedding scene) that many social events and celebrations can feel fake and forced. Once you are able to tell that people are masking their true thoughts and goals around you, escapism feels like the only way to survive. I genuinely think that Justine would have killed herself if the wedding ceremony kept going.
