Grey Gardens 1975
A painful watch. It is terrifying to know these women and feel the anger they inspire. Delusional, routinely contradictory, oozing of self pity and haughtiness. They possess disastrous potential to turn each other sour and sick. So wanting of love. To sit with them for morning coffee next to their sapphire sea would break me. The softest moment is perhaps when they smiled bashfully at each other listening to the first record - the only moment when they aren’t interrupting one another for desperate attention. “France fell, but Edie didn’t fall.” I think they fall every time.

One of my new favorite Miyazakis - gorgeous time-traveling fantasy with saturated stills of nature that sooth. Loved the parakeets with a quirky appetite for power and little children. Reminds me of my first pet, a sassy parakeet named Chip, who always shrieked and licked my fingers as a kid. I’d like to think she had a god complex too and lives in the Miyazaki sky kingdom now.
