Watched this on Tiktok in 30 different parts with Subway Surfers playing on the bottom half of the screen. Would not want it any other way.
I definitely missed a lot of the socio-political subtext when I watched it for the first time in high school.
The film was released during the height of the Japanese bubble, pre-92 collapse. I can only imagine the huuuge changes that the post-war era ushered into the country probably leaving so many people feeling left behind or swept away by the very promises of economic development.
So tying this back to the movie: you achieve progress, but at what cost?…
