A couple of years ago, a close friend got me the Star Wars Original Trilogy VHS box set from a yard sale. And now, having acquired a VCR, I can finally play them. Near as I can tell this box set was released around 1990, and is one of the earliest VHS release of the films. I grew up with the Special Editions released in 1997, when George Lucas started making changes and updates to the trilogy. This box set…

The Boy and the Heron 2023
Once more in theaters for good measure haha, this time viewing with the English dub. The voice cast overall was impressive. I still can't believe Robert Pattinson was the Heron. Near unrecognizable to me.

The Boy and the Heron 2023
Finally got my second watch stateside, this time still in the Japanese language but with English subtitles. Funny enough, things make more sense once you understand what is being said. Go figure.
Anyway, this movie is a touching story and (still) gorgeously animated. It's the Miyazaki sweetspot of fantastical worlds, strange creatures, and a deeply human journey. If this truly ends up being Miyazaki's last movie, it will be a very fitting swan song. But, the last two retirements haven't stuck so we'll see if he has another one in him haha.

The Boy and the Heron 2023
Seen at Cinema Ikspiari in Japanese language and no English subtitles
This was an interesting experiment in visual storytelling, since I know next to no Japanese. Luckily, Hayao Miyazaki is a master storyteller and the visuals do a good amount on their own. There were definitely story aspects I was confused on, but those will get cleaned up when I see the English sub or dub back home. The animation is gorgeous (no surprise for Ghibli). I'm glad I made time for this, because how often in my life will I get to say that I saw a new Studio Ghibli film while in Japan!
