This is being underrated by people who want another Parasite imo! It's not at that level but it is a good story well executed with his usual stylistic tics and humour that you will enjoy if you like his stuff. The relatively minor flaws are the hit and miss supporting cast (Naomi Ackie does her best but her character is oddly scripted; Mark Ruffalo similarly fulfils the brief but is a bit too relentlessly comic) and a conclusion that runs…
Pleasant, sort of mumblecore revival Canadian piece. Didn't quite gel with the main characters' relationship and the tone keeps shifting abruptly from light comedy to melodrama. It's well played through and I enjoyed spending time with them for 80 minutes, achieves its limited ambition overall.
Evaded reviews / hot takes before watching and fair to say was not really expecting what appeared, not indeed really a film about the modernist émigré's experience in the west at all, much though that is the hook to hang it on. Like the book this is good fun with a good sense of drama and the absurd, and an authentic rendering of political intrigue. Like the book I didn't love the twist ending but the cast are all really good and it's beautifully shot with some arresting frames. Asking us to imagine a British Pope is going a bit far though.
