    Heart Eyes

    ★★★

Heart Eyes feels like a genre-bender Blumhouse movie through and through. Josh Ruben is a rom-com AND a slasher flick that operate as two distinct halves, rather than simply melding their respective elements. The comedy emerges from how it actively embraces every imaginable genre cliché into the narrative. Properly gory and occasionally charming, even if the script is a little haphazard.

    Grafted

    ★★½

Grafted has the gross-out body horror in spades, but I didn’t find much to grasp onto. Wei is an underbaked character at the center of a story about beauty standards, bullying, and immigration that doesn’t tie it all together in a particularly interesting way. Sasha Rainbow’s directorial debut has the bones of a good movie, but it just doesn’t quite get there.

Barbie is a pink-soaked summer bash that invites you to indulge in Gerwig’s creative extravaganza, and it’s a party well worth attending.

    Captain America: Brave New World

    ★★

Captain America: Brave New World runs into the issue of feeling like generic, toothless television. It hesitates to take the stand it clearly yearns to, and the recycled storytelling keeps its greatest revelations from feeling impactful. Mackie and Ford do what they can with the roles, sharing a scattershot dramatic core that loses the traces of its sincerity in the shuffle.Hopefully this will turn around in the follow-ups to come.
