Iconic '80s sci-fi action that was something of a passion project for John Carpenter, and one he could only get produced after Halloween's huge box office success. It also cemented Kurt Russel as a bona fide action movie star and, while the film has its shortcomings (most notably in its pacing, the middle third dragging somewhat), it's style and tone carry it a long way to being one of the most influential films of the early decade. Žižek!

    ★★

An interesting profile of Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek that gives a general sense of his personality, and an abstruse sense of his ideas that is sure to confound and, perhaps, intrigue those not already familiar with his work. As documentaries go this doesn't pose enough questions, critical or otherwise, nor does it delve deep enough into any one aspect of Žižek's arguments; but it does provide some insight into the man, his self-analytical nature and what makes him tick and he's an entertaining enough figure and orator to accompany the viewer for the film's hour long runtime.

    ★★★½

Beyond the captivating, eye grabbing performance from an effervescent Isabelle Adjani the film does its best to confound the viewer with a sort of meandering intrigue that mirrors her character's fluctuating moods. At turns warm, soft and idyllic, the film shifts into darker tones at a moment's notice with relative aplomb, only heightening the faint thread of unease that takes hold early on; the whirlwind romance of the film's opening act giving way to something altogether more puzzling. Directed with an assured confidence and featuring some strong performances from many members of the supporting cast, One Deadly Summer proved an intriguing and memorable watch.
