A nice adaptation of a Somerset Maugham’s story of love/class/humanity.
I’m enjoying whatever this genre of turn-of-the-century colonial drama is called. Maybe softens the tension between coloniser and colonised to make for dreamy exposition, but the story itself is rich enough for the subtleties to come through (it’s literally set a year before the 1927 Revolution)
Gorgeous backdrops. Partly funded by the Chinese state, it apparently opened up unseen landscapes to Western cameras.
