I was rooting for this but holy shit what a horrifying and cruel way to end the last 15 minutes of what could've been at the very least an amusing and endearing, if schematic, treatment of the modern precariat at the heart of Chinese capitalist urbanism. And this is both politically and stylistically chilling. Any benefit of the doubt I had for the rest of this film immediately dissipated when the entire cast broke into 4th wall breaking karaoke chorus…
