Watched in the IFI today with an introduction from Game of Thrones’ Conleth Hill.
My main takeaway here was: I can’t stand the IFI! I’d somehow never been before but my god is it uncomfortable. Why are the seats all flat? My neck was incredibly sore afterwards and I had pins and needles in my legs.
Anyway, I still very much enjoyed Ran, but I had a better time with it when I watched it at home a year ago…
Got the chance to see one of my favourite films in a cinema and it holds up! Still an epic movie
Great coming of age story!
Weird pacing which jumped from slow-burn character development to every dramatic beat ever in about 30 minutes, but I didn’t mind it because the whole film is structured like a collection of weird childhood memories and encounters. The acting was also superb, especially considering the lead is a very young child.
There was one thing that I really didn’t like which was a random shift in aspect ratio maybe (the screen just becomes stretched vertically…
Really crazy to think people were worried this film would incite riots because the message is a clear one of class solidarity. Mookie, Buggin’ Out, even Sal, all think they are doing the right thing. But, rather than fighting the establishment/authoritative powers, they all fight with each other. While Sal and his sons act as antagonists of sorts in the film, there is really only one villain - The Power. Fight The Power.
