(So many canceled dudes are involved in this film. I try not to think about it.)
Tim Burton is another shamelessly creative director. His movies can be saccharine, yes (and some of them REALLY don't age well), but they're also gorgeous and inventive. Ed Wood is actually good. It's funny without being silly, stylized without being twee, and philosophical without being sentimental. This is mostly thanks to the screenplay by Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, who specialize in anti-hero biopics. They…

Lately, I'm really into directors who revel in more-is-more creativity. Vincente Minelli is one of these; his movies are unabashed riots of color and imagination. The painted sets! The costumes! The fantastical plots! Preston Ames's art direction and Irene Sharaff's costume designs are phenomenal. All the women have the same dress in various colors: a corseted bodice and the fullest, heaviest skirt you've seen in your life. I know the ethics are horrifying, but I'm too enchanted by Barbra Streisand to care. Her outfits! All those colorful peacoats with matching tights! Her mary janes! Her pyjamas! The minidresses! The necklines! THAT BEADED TURBAN! I need an "On a Clear Day" paper doll set. I can't count the number of times i watched this as a kid. It was on heavy rotation with Troop Beverly Hills and That's Entertainment! Tonight I rewatched it for the first time in…

Stellar adaptation of one of my favorite novels, and a wonderful movie in its own right. A star for the performances/screenplay: Russ Tamblyn is a perfect balance of gross and irresistible; the delicate vibe between Eleanor and Theo is a schizophrenia of maternal and sexy, curious and disgusted, allied and violent; and Mrs. Dudley... Mrs. Dudley!! Another star goes to the baroque set design, a third to the uncanny camera work, a fourth to the exquisitely Gothic mood, and a fifth to pulling off voice-over with aplomb (really, the movie should get another 5 just for that). Infinity stars!!! I watch and read it every fall.
