  in this movie girls are caged animals, shadows, shells of things for boys to watch, invent, appropriate. it's a film about the male gaze that isn't brave enough or smart enough to be properly horrified by it. instead the invasion and robbing of girls' personhood becomes a romance, and the movie refuses to look beyond the paper dolls its boys want to see. even their suicides are objectifying.

  iconic and forever quotable movie, from the intentionally funny ("what did i do wrong in my past life?") to the unintentionally funny ("i'm irish"). would be five stars if they were gay but will instead go down in history as the single movie most ruined by heterosexuality.
