I talked a lot of shit on this the first time I watched it and straight up I take it back.

The story is a direct homage to Hitchcock’s Notorious and the performances from Dougray Scott and Thandiwe Newton are solid. Some of the maximalist action sequences get to be a bit much but that’s why you hire John Woo and his impression on this film rules.

Honestly, the worst thing about this movie is that it’s the least “mission impossible”…

This fucking rocks. While there’s other Mission Impossible movies that I might like more, this one is so different and clearly not as interested in establishing a 7 film (8? More?) franchise. While there are incredible action set-pieces in this, the core of this story works as a paranoid, tense spy thriller. Cruise plays the young and more critical Hunt really well, De Palmas direction is idiosyncratic and excellent for the tone of this spy thriller, and Danny Elfman’s score…

Such an upsetting but also very funny movie.

Giving yourself the freedom to he happy, and to feel comfortable and to enjoy yourself can be hard to do. I think the core of this movie wants to tell you all of these things are okay. But it also wants to make a whole lot of fart jokes which I happen to find very funny. What a balance.

Enjoyed this a lot more the first time I saw it a few years ago. Also, the skill and craftsmanship that Daniels develop between this and EEAAO is insane. Not that this movie looks or feels bad, but holy shit they leveled up for that 2nd feature.
