    It made so much sense when I found out this was adapted from a play (by the playwright), because almost all the dialogue scenes were pretty good (esp the ones with Brenda Song and Kiernan Shipka) but man, those sequences of shaky handheld footage of one actress or another on The Strip just kinda, looking around, did absolutely nothing for me.

    Story was interesting but didn't do much to surprise me; maybe if Pearl didn't exist I would have gotten…

    Utterly stunning, between the cinematography, soundtrack, and performances. This was my third Altman film and I'm finally getting that his films really are much more about crafting a vibe than a strong narrative. Even then, man is it well-placed effort. Much like in Bonnie and Clyde, Warren Beatty excels at playing leading a leading man who goes into every room (or town) projecting alpha energy but is really barely hiding some deep insecurities.

    What a total dogshit mess. Bad choices every minute from beginning to end. How did the guy who made ID4 suddenly get so precious about destroying Manhattan? We had to pretend Godzilla was dead for most of the second half so we could fuck around with a bunch of unthreatening mini-Zillas knocking concession stands over in MSG instead of seeing the big one lay waste to Midtown?
