While I still think the first is an overall better film, as far as tentpole blockbusters go it really doesn't get much better than this. Every single physical/practical stunt only looks more impressive now. Genuinely impressed no one died while making this.

The chopper stunt during the final chase where they arc over the overpass and also somehow safely fly it under another overpass still makes my jaw drop. They're relatively "simple" moments and yet they're executed with such skill and framed so masterfully by Cameron that they seem miraculous.

A hyperactive, whole-hearted tribute to both classic Looney Tunes and traditional animation in general. There is so much care, attention and love put into this that it becomes palpable in nearly every scene. The folks who made this truly adore the medium and an era of cartoons long since passed.

It's been a while since a movie I wanted to like has frustrated me so much. And to be sure there's a lot to like here. Pattinson, as expected, knocks it out of the park playing multiple clones of himself. Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo are closer to a televangelist couple than Trump stand-ins (though their cult of personality is unmistakable MAGA) but they're fun to watch. And the production itself at times feels like Bong Joon Ho doing a…

James Cameron will never make a better, more accomplished film with better performances than The Abyss. Even if he were to abandon his fanatical devotion to the Avatar films, I'm not sure he's got the desire to make something this searingly personal anymore.

What a tremendous accomplishment this movie is. I held off watching any version of of it until I could see the special edition in a quality higher than a crappy DVD, and boy was this 4K restoration…
